Workday Solution Architect

Remote•UK•Full-time
£75,000 - £90,000 annually
About the Job
We are seeking an experienced Workday Solution Architect to provide client-side technical leadership and integration design assurance for an initial Workday HCM implementation.

The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating and managing the design and delivery of integrations between Workday and downstream applications, working closely with the System Integrator (SI), internal technical teams and third-party application owners.

The role will focus on ensuring integration designs are fit for purpose, appropriately documented, reviewed and formally approved, while overseeing technical delivery planning, non-production environment readiness, integration testing, cutover and transition into service.
This is primarily a client-side solution architecture, technical coordination and delivery assurance role, rather than a hands-on integration development position. However, the candidate should have sufficient technical expertise to review designs, challenge proposed solutions and support testing and technical issue resolution.

Key Responsibilities:
Solution Architecture and Integration Design:
  • Lead the client-side solution architecture and integration design activities across Workday and downstream systems.
  • Coordinate integration design workshops with the SI, HRIS teams, internal IT and downstream application owners.
  • Ensure end-to-end integration designs align with business requirements, technical standards, security requirements and the wider application architecture.
  • Review and challenge integration design proposals, including integration patterns, data flows, interfaces, scheduling, error handling and monitoring.
  • Ensure integration design documentation is complete, accurate and maintained throughout the implementation.
  • Manage the review, approval and formal sign-off of integration designs with relevant business, technical and application stakeholders.
  • Identify and manage integration dependencies, design gaps and architectural risks.

Integration Delivery Planning and Management:
  • Own and coordinate the technical delivery plans for an assigned portfolio of Workday integrations.
  • Work with the SI and downstream application owners to agree integration scope, responsibilities, development activities and delivery milestones.
  • Track integration design, build, testing and deployment activities against agreed plans.
  • Coordinate dependencies between Workday configuration, integration development and changes required within downstream applications.
  • Identify technical delivery risks, issues and dependencies, ensuring timely resolution or escalation.
  • Provide regular progress reporting, including integration delivery status, milestones and RAID management.
  • Ensure appropriate accountability for technical deliverables across the SI, internal teams and third-party suppliers.
  • Support the planning and setup of non-production environments required for integration development and testing.

Integration Testing and Technical Assurance:
  • Support the development and review of integration test approaches, scenarios and acceptance criteria.
  • Coordinate testing activities across Workday, the SI and downstream application teams.
  • Ensure integrations are tested end-to-end, including data transfer, transformations, error handling, reconciliation and exception management.
  • Undertake some hands-on integration test execution, where required.
  • Support defect investigation, triage, root cause analysis and resolution.
  • Review integration test evidence and support the assessment of technical readiness and exit criteria.
  • Ensure integration defects and outstanding technical issues are appropriately managed ahead of deployment.

Cutover and Deployment Planning:
  • Support the development of integration cutover plans, technical deployment schedules and associated dependencies.
  • Coordinate integration deployment activities with the SI and downstream application owners.
  • Ensure sequencing, connectivity changes, data dependencies and integration activation activities are documented.
  • Support technical rehearsals, cutover testing and readiness assessments.
  • Identify deployment risks and contribute to contingency and rollback planning.
  • Provide technical support during cutover and initial production stabilisation.

Transition Into Service:
  • Support the transition of integrations from programme delivery into business-as-usual support.
  • Ensure appropriate technical documentation, support procedures and operational handover materials are produced.
  • Coordinate knowledge transfer between the SI, internal IT, HRIS and application support teams.
  • Ensure integration monitoring, error handling, incident management and support ownership are clearly defined.
  • Support the establishment of operational procedures and integration support arrangements.
  • Assist with hypercare planning, production issue resolution and transition into steady-state operations.

Skills and Experience:
Essential:
  • Proven experience in a Solution Architect, Integration Architect or Technical Lead role on a Workday HCM implementation.
  • Strong understanding of Workday architecture, integration capabilities and integration design principles.
  • Experience integrating Workday with multiple downstream enterprise applications.
  • Knowledge of common Workday integration approaches, including Workday Studio, EIB, Core Connectors, Workday Web Services and API-based integrations.
  • Experience reviewing and assuring integration designs delivered by a System Integrator.
  • Strong understanding of integration patterns, data mapping, transformations, interface scheduling, security and error handling.
  • Experience coordinating technical delivery across multiple suppliers, application owners and internal technology teams.
  • Ability to develop and manage integration delivery plans, technical milestones, dependencies and RAID logs.
  • Experience coordinating non-production environments, connectivity and technical readiness activities.
  • Experience supporting end-to-end integration testing, defect investigation and technical issue resolution.
  • Understanding of integration cutover, deployment planning and transition into service.
  • Strong technical documentation, stakeholder management and communication skills.

Highly Desirable:
  • Experience delivering integrations as part of an initial Workday implementation.
  • Experience working in a client-side solution architecture or technical assurance capacity.
  • Familiarity with integrations between Workday and payroll, finance, recruitment, identity management and other HR-related platforms.
  • Knowledge of enterprise integration platforms, middleware and managed file transfer solutions.
  • Understanding of Workday security, authentication mechanisms and integration system users.
  • Experience working across complex application landscapes with multiple third-party suppliers.
  • Experience supporting integration test execution, reconciliation and technical defect resolution.
  • Familiarity with IT service management processes and transition into operational support.

Role Clarification – Client-Side Solution Architecture:
  • This role is focused on integration architecture, technical delivery coordination and solution assurance, rather than acting as the primary hands-on integration developer.
  • The System Integrator and relevant downstream application teams will retain responsibility for developing and configuring integrations.
  • The Solution Architect will be accountable for coordinating the end-to-end design, ensuring appropriate technical review and sign-off, overseeing delivery readiness and confirming that the integrations operate as intended across the wider application landscape.
  • The role will include practical technical involvement, particularly in environment readiness, integration testing, defect investigation, cutover and service transition.

Ideal Candidate:
  • An experienced Workday Solution Architect or Integration Lead who combines strong technical understanding of Workday and enterprise integrations with the ability to coordinate multiple suppliers and application owners.
  • The individual will be comfortable challenging SI design decisions, managing a portfolio of integration deliverables and ensuring that all technical dependencies are addressed ahead of testing and deployment.
  • They will be structured, delivery-focused and capable of working across both architecture and implementation activities to ensure a successful transition into production.
